Jet Jai Johnson, a 20-year-old man, was sentenced to 14 months of imprisonment for five separate acts of cruelty, including horrific assaults on a kangaroo, a joey, and three kid goats, which he filmed and shared on social media. The footage seemingly depicted shocking and malicious acts, including Johnson riding over the head of a young joey and brutally punching an adult kangaroo in the head before forcefully slamming it into the ground, causing it severe fear, pain, and distress.
The heinous nature of Johnson’s actions is further exemplified by a distressing account of him kicking one of the kid goats—only four weeks old and weighing just 4 kilograms—leaving it to rotate in the air before crashing to the ground. This cruelty was reportedly a source of amusement for Johnson, who likened his kick to a celebrated sports figure. Despite his conviction and the acknowledgment of his actions as “offences against the community,” it is essential that society takes a stronger stance to ensure that such brutality is met with appropriate consequences and serves as a deterrent to potential offenders.
The call for change is urgent.
