Target: District Attorney of Cumberland County, Tennessee
Goal: Ensure appropriate punishment for alleged severe neglect of dog found weighing only 17 pounds.
The heartbreaking plight of Zeus, a husky mix, is a chilling reminder of the horrors of animal neglect. Rescued from a home in Cumberland County, Tennessee, he was reportedly found in such dire conditions that he was unable to stand, weighed only 17 pounds, and suffered from severe dehydration, worms, and injuries to his ears. This poor dog, along with other animals discovered in the same home, allegedly lived in a filth-ridden environment, deprived of basic needs like food and water, which led to what the sheriff’s office described as a shocking pattern of long-term neglect.
In a welfare check conducted on January 17, 2024, distressing sounds were reportedly heard from within the residence on Breckenridge Drive, prompting intervention by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office and animal control. According to reports, the neglect documented in this case was so severe that Zeus’s body temperature was a dangerously low 90.6 degrees Fahrenheit when found. Despite these unimaginable circumstances, Zeus defied the odds and has made a remarkable recovery, now healthy and looking for a forever home. However, the person allegedly responsible for his suffering, Amber Cheyann Bruce, was given only 11 months and 29 days of supervised probation after pleading guilty to animal cruelty, which many deem insufficient given the severity of the case.
Prompting justice against animal cruelty is crucial to ensure that such alleged horrid neglect never happens again. The community must demand that authorities take this matter seriously and impose appropriate penalties that fit the severity of the crime. We need to ensure that those who neglect and harm animals face significant consequences for their actions, to protect innocent lives like Zeus and to send a strong message that animal cruelty will not be tolerated.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear District Attorney,
Zeus, a rescued husky mix, is a living testament to the horrors of animal neglect that occurred in Cumberland County. Reportedly found in a state of severe malnutrition, weighing only 17 pounds, and suffering from life-threatening conditions, Zeus apparently endured unimaginable suffering due to the alleged neglect of Amber Cheyann Bruce. He was reportedly discovered in a filthy environment devoid of food and water, alongside other animals in dire straits. The charges brought against Bruce resulted in only a plea that led to a mere probation sentence, which does not reflect the gravity of the wrongdoing or the pain inflicted on these defenseless animals.
Given the disturbing evidence of seeming long-term neglect that has emerged from this tragic case, it is imperative that the justice system take decisive action. The community deeply cares about the treatment of animals and demands that those who perpetrate cruelty face consequences that match the severity of their actions. It is vital to reinforce that animal cruelty is unacceptable and to prevent future cases from arising by imposing stricter penalties on offenders.
We urge you to review this case thoroughly and ensure that appropriate measures are taken to address the cruelty inflicted upon Zeus and other animals involved. The community deserves to see justice served, and it is essential to hold individuals accountable for their actions to ensure the safety and well-being of animals in our region.
Sincerely,
