STOP THE SUFFERING OF STRAY CATS AND DOGS IN Mauritius

Target: His Honourable Arvin Boolell, Minister of Agriculture,

Dear Mr Arvin Boolell,

This letter is about the suffering of animals in Mauritius.
I am going to concentrate on the stray cats and dogs who are found all over the island. The animals are dumped, new born kittens and puppies abandoned, people mistreat the cats and dogs, beat them up, poison them. They become sick, they die. This situation is bad for the animals as well as for humans. The sick and dead animals spread infections. The tourists who visit Mauritius do comment and express their concerns about the situation of the strays they come across.
All this is done by people not taking responsibility to look after their pets, who become strays, inconvenience other people who mistreat them.
I am appealing to you to use your power to deal with this problem.
There are already free sterilisation programmes. More people must be encouraged to use this service.
People must be made aware of the importance of taking responsibility for their pets by giving them the information using the radio, television, newspaper. In schools children can be taught how to be compassionate towards animals, how to care for them.
The police should be given more power to deal with perpetrators of abuse towards animals
The NGOs, rescuers, volunteers, animal lovers are already doing a lot.
As well as the Animal welfare Act, there must be a department specifically to deal with the strays and cases of animal abuse.
Please, use your position to make a difference and improve the fate of the animals of Mauritius.
Thank you
