Target: Kristen Waggoner, President and CEO of Alliance Defending Freedom
Goal: End campaign against legal equality and enhance legal support for immigrants and refugees.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrates the life of a man who fought for the poor, the oppressed, and the downtrodden, despite assertions from his contemporaries that he was too “radical.” King was driven by his Christian faith, which compelled him to create the Southern Christian Leadership Conference: an advocacy group still standing and fighting today. Unfortunately, the most recent Martin Luther King Jr. Day coincided with very public political declarations against the values that King and his religion hold dear.
Several executive orders were signed that took aim at policies intended to mitigate the effects of racism and other forms of prejudice in public sectors. Executive orders also targeted immigrants and refugees: groups that Christians are instructed to show kindness and empathy in dozens of verses of the Holy Bible. Despite these contradictions between scripture and current public policy, an increasingly influential group of lawyers claiming to be driven by their Christian faith has ignored or even championed these policies.
Sign the petition below to urge these so-called warriors of faith to stop standing on hypocrisy and to be guided by true Christian values.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Ms. Waggoner,
Your mission states that “the ADF advances every person’s God-given right to live and speak the truth. We contend for the Truth in law, policy, and the public square.”
Does this truth include acknowledgement of passages such as Galatians 3:28: “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Or Jesus’ assertion in Matthew 25: “When you refused to help the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were refusing to help me.’” If so, why does this organization campaign against Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and other so-called “woke” policies that do regard every person as equal and “one”? Does “the God-given right to live and speak” only extend to a privileged few?
And why is this organization largely silent on the Christian directive to demonstrate understanding and kindness to immigrants and refugees, as Jesus himself was a member of these ostracized groups for much of his life? Dating back to the Sanctuary Movement, Christians have been politically targeted for providing comfort and aid to refugees. Where is the legal help for them or for the human beings they value? Shouldn’t you be compelled by Leviticus 19:34: “The foreigner who resides with you must be to you like a native citizen among you; so you must love him as yourself, because you were foreigners in the land of Egypt.” Or what about James 2:1-4: “How can you claim to have faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ if you favor some people over others? … If you give special attention and a good seat to the rich person, but you say to the poor one, ‘You can stand over there, or else sit on the floor’—well, doesn’t this discrimination show that your judgments are guided by evil motives?”
If you are truly guided by the teachings of Jesus Christ, then you will end your campaign against equality and join many of your fellow faithful in the fight for immigrant and refugee rights.
Sincerely,
[Your Name Here]
