Success: Writers Secure Key Wins in Concluded Strike

Target: Carol Lombardini, President of Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers

Goal: Applaud key win for the labor movement after months-long strike.

Healthcare and auto workers have become the latest representatives of a growing labor movement in America. The most recent chapter of the continued fight for employee rights arguably began in May, when the Writers Guild of America (WGA) began a months’-long strike to secure fairer wages and better job security. Supporters of this ForceChange petition called on the powerful production companies prolonging the strike to hear and meet worker demands. Now, after nearly five months, they have listened.

When high-level studio executives finally took a seat at the negotiating table, days of talks ended with a new three-year contract that the WGA leadership characterized as “exceptional.” The deal reportedly includes new regulations on artificial intelligence, at least a five percent pay increase (with more raises coming after specified dates), and new residual guarantees that will no longer short-shrift writers from a main income stream. A message sent to union members applauded their efforts and sacrifices: “what we have won in this contract…is due to the willingness of this membership to exercise its power, to demonstrate its solidarity, to walk side-by-side, to endure the pain and uncertainty.”

Sign the petition below to echo the support for fairness in the workplace.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Ms. Lombardini,

The deal unanimously approved by WGA leadership demonstrates how progress can be made when all sides come to the table with an open mind and a listening ear. Once ratified, the new contract should help restore lost trust and help the entire industry get back to work. Thank you for the role you played as a mediator between these groups.

And thank you for helping achieve gains that show this fight was not about competing interests but about the best interests for all involved.

Sincerely,
