Target: Elizabeth Truss, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom
Goal: Do not strip away important legal protections for wildlife and environment.
A sickness nicknamed COVID for bees recently led to the targeted eradication of many bee colonies. And if a new plan set to be enacted by the United Kingdom (UK) goes through, these living beings critical to life on Earth could be in even more danger from humans. The UK government has already come down on the side of pesticides by allowing use of previously banned substances, including a pesticide deemed extremely harmful to bees. The so-called Brexit Freedoms bill would diminish protections even further.
According to the plan, any law implemented while the UK was still part of the European Union will be abolished before 2023. Pesticide regulations would be among the canceled initiatives. In fact, over 500 laws related to environmental regulation and nature protection would be impacted.
This drastic step sets the wrong precedent for the new prime minister’s administration. Sign the petition below to advise an urgent course correction.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Prime Minister Truss,
Your administration has claimed that the Brexit Freedoms bill would not cause wide-scale disruption. You have also assured that many of the initiatives eliminated by the bill could be reinstated. Prior actions cast this assertion into serious doubt.
Since 2018, for example, UK leadership has vowed to introduce a plan to address pesticide harm. Years later, this needed action has yet to come to fruition. Will the same fate befall the many laws – including 500-plus environmental protections—that will be no more in a year?
The United Kingdom is in a period of immense transition. Do not further destabilize it by enacting an artificial deadline that stands to cause more harm than good.
Sincerely,
[Your Name Here]
