Stop Allowing the Sale of Puppy Mill Dogs

Target: Craig Newmark, Founder of Craigslist

Goal: Demand Craigslist and other online domains be more vigilant about the sale of puppy mill dogs on their sites.

Puppy mills are particularly cruel operations. At these breeding facilities, dogs are kept in overcrowded, unsanitary conditions, forced to live in tiny cages that are rarely—if ever—cleaned. Due to the close confines and lack of veterinary care access, dogs at these mills often fall sick and premature death is relatively common. Puppies are removed from their mothers shortly after birth, so that their mothers can move onto producing yet another litter. These dogs are often not even let out of their cages to exercise or interact with humans, leaving them unsocialized and anxious. Puppy mills largely neglect the needs of mother dogs and puppies, as the sole goal of their operation is to produce as many dogs as possible to sell for as much money as possible.

While many states have begun banning the sale of dogs in pet stores—as most of these dogs are supplied by abusive puppy mill operations—puppy mill owners have found creative ways around in person sales. Owners have grown increasingly reliant on online forums, such as Craigslist and Ebay, where they deceive customers with pictures of happy and healthy puppies in fields with bows—shielding the public from the harsh reality of their business.

While Craigslist has formally banned the sale of live animals on its website, backyard breeders and mill operators are still easily able to sell their animals on the site under false pretenses. Sign this petition to demand Craigslist pay more close attention to the sale of live animals on its site and forbid any further posts advertising available puppies.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Newmark,

While Craigslist formally prohibits the sale of live animals, many illegal or unethical breeders have found ways around this ban and continue to sell their animals on your online platform. Craigslist has become a hotspot for puppy mill operators to advertise their dogs under the guise of being a reputable breeder. Though they advertise healthy looking puppies in spacious fields with bows in their fur, these images couldn’t be farther from the truth. Dogs at puppy mills suffer extreme abuse, as they are viewed only as vessels to breed and sell for profit rather than as animals with individual needs.

We are asking you, Mr. Newmark, to be more vigilant about the sale of puppy mill dogs on your site and to prevent Craigslist from being involved in illegal and unethical puppy trafficking operations.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]

  1. I have saved 3 puppy mill adult chihuahua’s for FREE from Craigs List. All came to me sick, starving, skin and bones.

  2. Cynthia A Pisarcik says:

    THIS MUST BE STOPPED !!!!!!!!!

  3. Who are the stupid ignorant people still buying puppies on line? Don’t shop. Adopt. There so many rescues with whatever breed you would like. Find one and stop supporting this abomination.

    • Deborah Haws says:

Kerry, people always have some idiotic excuse, why they obtain their cat or dog from the most, what we call, forbidden source. People are not thinking and so stupid. It is out of control, still. So sad, animals are not really loved, just another object for them. I know all these commenters would want every animal in the world to be respected for what they are. It really hurts emotionally.

Can’t believe I’m now signing my 100th petition to shut down these inhuman beasts from having this job!

ENOUGH ALREADY AND MAKE LAWS TO SHUT THEM DOWN ONCE AND FOR ALL!!!!

Everyone knows this is inhumane and disgusting but yet we keep petitioning these idiot people’s cruelty, abusing these dogs day and day out. What does it take to get off the paper and into action? ENOUGH!! ❣️

  5. Stephanie Geyser says:

Why can’t puppy mill breeders get off their lazy butts and get PROPER jobs, and earn an honest day’s wages (like the rest of us do) instead of making money from getting female dogs raped, in order to produce litter after litter after litter of puppies, and then selling their unfortunate offspring (through the disreputable Craigslist) to unknown people – probably to also be abused or raped or used in “crush” videos for money? And no doubt Craigslist also makes money out of it. Sick, sick, sick.

  6. KELLY KRAMER says:

Enough greed and cruelty already! Shut all dog breading operations down!

  7. It amazes me that there is so much media attention to this horrific abuse yet it goes on and on. How many animals are being thrown away
. Our rescues are bursting with trashed animals yet this breeding continues. Tougher laws and banning basically. Until then this will continue. Humans are greedy, cunning, cruel and clever at hiding the truth.

  8. Puppy mills are notorious for sick and abused animals being raised in heinous and disgusting conditions. These poor animals are often congenitally ill and cost their ‘buyers’ a fortune in care that was ignored while caught in the hell of a puppy mill. These animals often have very serious behavior problems too and end up being dumped at a shelter or abandoned in a parking lot. Craigslist selling these poor animals is a willing and act making them a partner in animal abuse, encouraging scum bags to run puppy mills and often getting the clueless to buy these animals. Craigslist is a willing partner with puppy mills – that’s sick.

  9. Amazing how people buy from puppymills even though millions of unwanted dogs are in shelters and being euthanized annually. Craig Newark is a scumbag for condoning animal cruelty on his internet platform.

  10. Julia Edinger says:

    I TOTALLY AGREE WITH cassy
“Amazing how people buy from puppymills even though millions of unwanted dogs are in shelters and being euthanized annually. Craig Newark is a scumbag for condoning animal cruelty on his internet platform.”
People must “STOP BUYING PUPPIES”….. SO MANY NEED TO BE ADOPTED FROM SHELTERS, NON PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS WHO RESCUE STRAYS, ABUSED STARVING INJURED DOG’s, PUPPIES, KITTEN’S AND CAT’S😭😭😭😭THESE PEOPLE NEED HELP FINDING RESPONSIBLE HUMANS WHO REALLLY CARE ABOUT ANIMALS TO ADOPT EVEN FOSTER FURRRBABIES IN GREAT NEED OF A LOVING HOME….

  11. Puppy mills are hell on earth for the dogs forced to live in them. Humans can be so crual and heartless to the innocent when it comes to making a buck. These places all need to be shutdown now! There are so many dogs languishing in shelters and rescues.

  12. Maria Lavorato says:

No animal should be subjected to this kind of horrific life!. Those who subject these sweet little babies, to agony and pain, should be CAGED AND STARVED AND IGNORED!!

PUPPY MILLS SHOULD ALL BE SHUT DOWN FOREVER!!!!
ANYONE INVOLVED IN ANY CAPACITY SHOULD BE CHARGED FOR ANIMAL CRUELTY TO THE MAX, FINED! THIS SHOULD BE ILLEGAL!

THE TORTURE OF ANIMALS SHOULD NOT BE USED FOR THE ILL GOTTEN GAINS OF MAN!

    Mr. Newmark CLEAN YOUR SITE!!!

  13. Abuse to animals is manyfold. Cock fishing, dog fighting, puppy mills, Craig’s list, Killing contests, You tube videos, and so much more! We have many ways to entertain ourselves yet this horror continues. Today I read a guy, 17 years old, who posted a video of his taking a cat by the tail, swinging it around in mid air and then smashing the cat on the ground. He was apprehended by the police. The article I read said the cat would be fine, really? The cat has to have an eye removed. The cat is under one year of age. The cat has head trauma which means convulsions now and in the future. They spoke of this teenager calling him a child. Really? One year from now he will walk into a gun store, as he will be 18, and buy an assult weapon to kill and meme as many people as possible. This so called child has a driver’s license, today!
The article was pleading for him to have mental heath counseling. Where are his parents? Maybe they should all be charged for his mans’ crime. No one has the right to injure and kill people or animals. Period! This guy will get away with his crime and will go on to do worse. He knows right from wrong, he did the crime, I think he should be tried, as an adult, go to prison and be followed there by his parents. They knew he needed help so why wait until he murders others? There is no excuse for his actions and the only reason is his wanting his 15 minutes of fame no matter what harm he caused. Our whole process is disgusting. We need laws and then we need to implement those laws and apply them to the crime and the people responsible … all of them! Animal abuse needs to be a law in EVERY state!

  14. Urszula Lund says:

This is an EXTREME ANIMAL ABUSE!!!
The sale of puppy mills dogs is a cynical and greedy ABOMINATION! This needs to stop!

  15. Agree all comments, STOP THIS SHIT NOW LAWS NEED TO STOP THIS CRUELTY AND PUNISH THESE PEOPLE SERVERLY WHATS WRONG WITH THE WORLD AND CRUEL Basterds’s stop this worldwide now and there should be no backyard breeder and reg breeders only and limited on how many can be bred also desexed microchip and buyers check before allowing to take.

  16. Wendy+Morrison says:

BAN ALL PUPPYMILLS ARE RUNNING IMMEDIATELY BECAUSE THESE STUPID CRUEL IDIOTS DO NOT CARE ANY OF THESE PUPPIES BUT MONEY!!!!!

  17. Kris Dreyer says:

When they close the puppy mills, please go, save and rescue dogs from the mills and rescue cats from the mills.

  18. The damage done to the dogs used and abused for breeding is horrendous. I currently have 2 adorable Westie girls who were used on Puppy Farms (Mills) and have previously had a boy who was used as a stud dog on one for 7-8 years, starved and beaten. It took a lot of time and patience to get them to trust and to repair the physical and mental damage done by some greedy, lazy, sadistic bully for profit. Their condition, pain and terror when I got them was heartbreaking. Such evilness so often goes unchecked and unpunished. That is shameful. NEVER buy a dog, cat, rabbit etc.- rescue instead. I have had many rescue pets. Their transformation to happy and content, from broken, terrified, cowering and confused is a joy and a reward in itself. And when they learn to play, feel confident enough to be naughty and cheeky and show their own character it is an amazing feeling. All of you who have rescued a cruelly treated pet will know what I mean.

  19. Jennifer L FINIZIO says:

How can we STILL be talking about f*cking puppy mills? Who is so ignorant not to know about this? Or is it that people are such monsters they don’t care as long as they get that cute puppy in the window? Disgusting and horrifying.
