Success: Draconian Abortion Bans Blocked

The Supreme Court sent shockwaves through the nation when it reversed its previous precedent and overturned Roe v. Wade. This ruling in effect made women’s reproductive rights a state issue. Several states have since tried to curb these rights even more, as highlighted in this ForceChange petition. While the pro-choice landscape looks dark, some recent developments have offered important glimmers of light and hope.

For one, Michigan’s Supreme Court itself struck down a controversial 1930s-era state law that would have implemented arguably the strictest abortion ban in the United States. Despite Republican legislators’ attempts to block a vote, the issue will now move to a state referendum, where polls indicate restoration of reproductive rights will likely occur. Kansas voters recently voted overwhelmingly to restore these rights in their own referendum.

In addition, South Carolina conservative state senators joined with their more progressive colleagues to roll back a proposed six-week abortion ban. And in an executive action signed by President Biden, access to emergency contraception and medical abortion was enhanced at the federal level. The president also urged the country’s top health and justice agencies to protect and assist women who must now travel to safe haven states for abortions.
