Success: Emissions-Based Environmental Protections Restored

Target: Michael Regan, Administrator of Environmental Protection Agency

Goal: Support reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and manufacture of zero-emission vehicles.

California is one of the world’s most traveled states, and as such it has historically been a big driver of transportation-related carbon emissions. The state tried to rectify some of its damaging actions with the nation’s strictest greenhouse gas emissions standards and with a commitment to transitioning to zero-emission vehicles. The Trump administration, as detailed in this ForceChange petition, hobbled California’s essential actions and attempted to prevent other states from adopting these efforts to combat climate change. Thanks to continued public pressure, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has now reversed this damaging obstruction.

The agency has restored California’s authority to set tougher emissions standards. Perhaps more crucially, it will no longer stand in the way of other states enacting similar helpful initiatives. In a statement, EPA Administrator Michael Regan said: “our partnership with states to confront the climate crisis has never been more important. With today’s action, we reinstate an approach that for years has helped advance clean technologies and cut air pollution for people not just in California, but for the U.S. as a whole.”

Sign the petition below to commend Administrator Regan for this critical step forward.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Administrator Regan,

Progress is often measured with two steps forward and one step back. While your predecessors took several steps backward regarding environmental policy, you have worked to reclaim those steps and finally get the nation moving forward toward clean energy and a cleaner world once again. The restoration of California’s emissions standards represents another important step. This action will hopefully serve as a template for other states to take similar meaningful action.

Thank you for championing progress and for not surrendering in the country’s and the world’s battle against the climate crisis.

Sincerely,
