Success: Minimum Wage Raised to $15 an Hour

Target: District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser

Goal: Celebrate minimum wage increase to $15 an hour.

The District of Columbia became the latest city to increase the minimum wage to $15 an hour after a measure was approved by a council. The legislation now goes to Mayor Muriel Bowser, who has promised to sign it, thus signaling a huge victory for labor rights activists across the country.

D.C.’s current minimum wage sits at $10.50, a paltry amount that is far too small to cover rent, utilities, and living expenses in such an expensive city. This new measure, which will take full effect in a few years, ensures that working class citizens will be able to provide for themselves and their families.

The “Fight for 15” has become a conversation topic on the national stage, as seen here in this ForceChange petition. In taking this action D.C. joins several other cities, as well as the state of California, that have already enacted similar measures. Sign the petition below to thank Mayor Bowser for supporting this important piece of legislation.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mayor Bowser,

I am writing to commend your city for recently approving an initiative to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour. For too long the working class has toiled away, earning insufficient wages and struggling to survive. By ensuring that these workers earn a fair salary, you and your fellow politicians have helped end a vicious cycle of poverty.

In raising the minimum wage D.C. joins several other cities, as well as the entire state of California, in the “Fight for 15,” and I salute your progressive policies and commitment to helping the working class.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
