Success: North Carolina Can’t Implement LGBT Discrimination Law

Target: Vanita Gupta, Department of Justice Civil Rights Division Principal Deputy Attorney General

Goal: Praise federal condemnation of a proposed anti-LGBT law.

Thanks in part to petitions like ForceChange’s Preserve LGBT Rights Protections in North Carolina, North Carolina Republican governor Pat McCrory must confirm he will not implement a bill that discriminates against LGBT people.

U.S. Justice Department officials said the controversial bill is a violation of the U.S. Civil Rights Act under both the workplace discrimination statutes and Title IX, which forbids discrimination in education based on gender.

The original North Carolina state law voided a Charlotte municipal ordinance that allowed transgender people to use the restroom of the gender they identify with and prohibited other cities and counties from passing anti-discrimination statutes. It also said trans people can only use the restroom of the gender on their birth certificate.

By signing this petition, you will applaud that this hateful and discriminatory law has been challenged.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mrs. Gupta,

Your department has notified the governor of North Carolina that the law he signed discriminating against LGBT people violates the U.S. Civil Rights Act. Everyone from celebs to companies have taken a stand against this hateful statute and we have once again shown the world that love wins and hate will not be tolerated.

Thank you for standing up for trans people in North Carolina and making sure discrimination is not legalized.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
