Success: LGBT Rights Protest Location Recognized as Historic Site

Target: Paul Loether, National Register Chief

Goal: Thank the National Register of Historic Places for recognizing the cultural importance of Julius’ Bar and helping to preserve it.

The site of a famous LGBT rights sit-in has been officially added to the National Register of Historic Places. The register explained that Julius’ Bar was added to the list due to its “association with an important early event in the modern gay rights movement.” This victory for the preservation of LGBT history results from the support of members of the public, including the people here at ForceChange.

Julius’ Bar is just the fourth LGBT landmark added to the National Register of Historic Places. As such, its addition increases the diversity of our nation’s protected sites. Moreover, recognition of the bar as an important location in LGBT history offers important tools to preservationists. Due to its enrollment in the National Register for Historic Places, Julius’ Bar is eligible for tax incentives and federal grant programs that will support its continued operation.

As we celebrate the preservation of LGBT history with the induction of Julius’ Bar to the National Register of Historic Places, please also sign our petition to thank National Register Chief Paul Loether for his attention to public input.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr Loether,

Thank you for affirming the historical and cultural significance of Julius’ Bar. As the National Register of Historic Places noted, the site’s enrollment on the register recognizes its “association with an important early event in the modern gay rights movement.”

Julius’ Bar hosted a critical moment in our recent history when oppressed people stood up and rejected their second-class-citizen status. In 1966, four members of The Mattachine Society protested at the bar against state Liquor Authority policy, which held that simply being gay made them disruptive. By formally affirming the historical significance of the bar, you and the National Register of Historic Places affirmed the diversity of America’s national history. Julius’s Bar is only the fourth LGBT site to be added to the list.

By adding Julius’ Bar to the National Register of Historic Places, you and the register also provided important protections to the establishment. Due to its enrollment in the register, Julius’ Bar is eligible for tax incentives and federal grant programs. Those sources of material support promote the continued operation of Julius’ Bar and its survival as a historical landmark.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
