End Overcrowding, Electric Shocks, and Suffering in Fish Farming

Target: Bob Ferguson, Governor of Washington

Goal: Prevent environmental harm from fish farms and ensure the humane treatment of fish.

Recent investigations have raised alarming concerns about the realities of industrial fish farming, which is purported to alleviate the pressures of overfishing but contributes to severe environmental degradation and animal suffering. A significant portion of the fish used in aquaculture are sourced from wild populations, with over one-fifth of marine life removed from oceans utilized for fishmeal and fish oil. Shockingly, this practice leads to overfishing, pollution, and human rights abuses, all while promoting a façade of sustainability.

More than half of the seafood consumed globally comes from fish farming, and the distressing conditions faced by these fish are often overlooked. Thousands are confined to overcrowded tanks or cages, where poor water quality and parasites create unbearable living conditions. Additionally, investigations have uncovered evidence of overcrowding, exposure to electric shocks, and neglect that results in suffocation. Such practices highlight a gross disregard for these sentient beings and their welfare.

To create a more compassionate and sustainable food system, it is essential to advocate for transparent supply chains and stronger legal protections for aquatic life. The disturbing practices uncovered in recent investigations cannot continue unchallenged. The demand for humane treatment and environmental responsibility in fish farming is crucial for both animal welfare and the health of marine ecosystems.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Ferguson,

Recent investigations into fish farming have unveiled troubling realities that cannot be ignored. Industrial aquaculture is contributing to overfishing, pollution, and egregious human rights abuses, instead of providing the sustainable solution it was intended to offer. The alarming statistic that over one-fifth of the marine life taken from our oceans is used as feed for farmed fish illustrates a serious contradiction in the purported benefits of aquaculture. This system not only threatens our oceans but also inflicts suffering on countless fish who endure dire living conditions in these operations.

Fish are proven to be intelligent and sensitive creatures, capable of experiencing pain and distress. Yet in today’s fish farms, they are subjected to overcrowding and poor water quality that compromise their health and well-being. Distressing behaviors consistent with suffering, such as cessation of eating or responses akin to depression, have been documented. This mistreatment shines a light on a need for urgent reform in the regulations governing fish farming practices.

To protect both our environment and the welfare of fish, it is essential to implement stricter regulations on fish farming within Washington State. Ensuring transparent supply chains and humane treatment of aquatic animals is a moral imperative that can lead to a healthier and more compassionate food system. We urge you to take decisive action to end the harmful practices associated with industrial aquaculture and to pave the way for a future that respects all living beings.

Sincerely,
