Reports indicate that this facility, the last major beagle breeder for laboratory use in the United States, houses thousands of animals—approximately 16,000 beagles, 2,058 cats and kittens, 13,959 ferrets, and 2,108 pigs—many of whom live short, painful lives and face gruesome deaths in biomedical experiments. Disturbing new evidence compiled by activists and submitted to authorities suggests that animals are killed in ways described as “depraved or sadistic,” constituting felony animal cruelty under New York state law.
Whistleblower accounts and inspection records allegedly reveal not only the horrific conditions these animals endure but also a systematic operation that some activists claim amounts to a “criminal enterprise.” This evidence has prompted calls for a serious inquiry into possible violations of animal welfare laws and an immediate halt to practices that are reportedly not just damaging but possibly torturous. An investigator’s referral has already called for the Wayne County District Attorney to launch a criminal investigation into the facility and to protect the animals from imminent harm.
