Enforce Ban on Cruel Force-Feeding of Ducks and Geese for Foie Gras Production

Target: Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, President of Brazil

Goal: Ensure rigorous enforcement of ban on the cruel practice of force-feeding animals for foie gras production.

The recent ban on the production and sale of foie gras in Brazil marks a significant milestone in animal rights advocacy, yet it is crucial that it be fully implemented to end this inhumane practice altogether. The cruel method of “gavage” forces these birds to consume excessive amounts of food through metal or plastic tubes, leading to severe health issues, including diseased livers that grow up to ten times their normal size, and suffering such as injuries, impaired mobility, and extreme stress. Yet, this victory must not only reflect legislative momentum but also enforcement.

During foie gras production male birds are subjected to horrific treatment, while female counterparts are often killed shortly after hatching. The anguish experienced by these animals highlights the urgent need for strict regulations and repercussions for violators. The recently enacted Law No. 15,475/2026, while a commendable step forward, must be paired with comprehensive enforcement measures. Those involved in the production and sale of foie gras must face appropriate punishment, ensuring that such acts of cruelty are not tolerated in the future.

Brazil can set a powerful example for animal protection worldwide. Holding violators responsible not only serves justice but also solidifies the nation’s dedication to a more humane food system that respects animal welfare. The time to act is now—appropriate punishment for those involved in the cruelty associated with foie gras production must be enforced immediately.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Lula da Silva,

The recent passage of Law No. 15,475/2026, prohibiting the production and sale of foie gras, is a tremendous victory for animal rights in Brazil. However, it is imperative that it be fully enforced. The horrific treatment of ducks and geese during foie gras production, including force-feeding that leads to severe health issues and suffering, cannot go unaddressed.

Ensuring rigorous enforcement of this new law is essential to preventing future animal cruelty. The widespread practices of forcing male birds to undergo painful procedures while disposing of female birds shortly after hatching emphasizes the need for serious repercussions for such actions. By not only banning foie gras production but also pursuing appropriate punishment for violators, Brazil can make a bold statement against animal cruelty.

As advocates for animal welfare, we urge you to take immediate action to enforce this ban and ensure that those previously involved in the heinous act of force-feeding are prosecuted. Together, let us work toward a more humane society that respects and protects all beings.

Sincerely,
