Target: Katie Rey, Department of Public Relations, New York State Fair
Goal: End the inhumane cow birthing display at the New York State Fair permanently, to protect the welfare of pregnant cows and their calves.
The New York State Fair’s cow birthing display has turned a natural and profound process into a public spectacle, leaving countless cows subjected to unnecessary distress. For years, pregnant cows have been taken from their familiar surroundings to give birth in a chaotic environment filled with noise and crowds. Over 400 calves have been born amid this spectacle since 2013, only to allegedly face traumatic separations from their mothers shortly after birth, reducing them to mere attractions. This disturbing treatment suggests not only a lack of respect for the animals’ inherent needs but also a complete disregard for their emotional bonds.
These cows, which in nature seek quiet and secluded spaces to give birth, were instead forced to labor in an environment that lacked the serenity necessary for such a significant life event. Such treatment not only increases their stress levels but also showcases the troubling norms of the dairy industry, where calves are removed from their mothers soon after birth to optimize profit from milk production. This painful separation is emblematic of a much larger issue of animal exploitation in the dairy sector, where the emotional suffering of both mother and calf is systematically ignored.
With the New York State Fair having paused this exhibit in 2026, there is an opportunity to make a transformative change. Rather than reinstating the display of live births, it is imperative to choose more ethical alternatives, such as interactive education using innovative technology like AI-powered robotic calves. Protecting the dignity and wellbeing of these animals is critical, and thus, the demand is clear: end the cow birthing display permanently.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Ms. Rey,
The well-being of animals at the New York State Fair must take precedence as the fair re-evaluates its practices. The cow birthing display, which has been in place for years, has reportedly subjected pregnant cows to unnecessary stress and chaos, compromising their natural birthing process. Rather than being given the opportunity to give birth in a safe and quiet environment, these animals have been displayed before large crowds, resulting in the separation of mothers and calves shortly after birth. This heart-wrenching process only serves the interests of those who exploit animals for entertainment, disregarding the emotional suffering experienced by these devoted mothers and their young.
The distressing reality is that the dairy industry routinely removes calves from their mothers immediately after birth to maximize milk production for human consumption. The public spectacle at the fair mirrors these disturbing practices, highlighting the urgent need for change. Rather than perpetuating this cycle of suffering, the pause in the birthing display should mark the beginning of a more compassionate approach. By choosing to implement educational alternatives such as AI-powered robotic calves, the fair can offer an engaging experience for visitors while sparing animals from unnecessary distress.
It is time for the New York State Fair to take a stand against the exploitation of animals and permanently retire the cow birthing exhibit. This action can set a standard for ethical treatment of animals in public displays and ensure that the fair reflects values of compassion and respect for all living beings. We kindly ask for your commitment to protect these animals by making this pause permanent and opting for humane alternatives instead.
Sincerely,
