If the octopus farming project had proceeded, it would have forced these remarkable animals—known for their ability to use tools and solve complex problems—into desolate and stressful tanks designed to induce aggression and cannibalism. The cruelty would extend beyond octopuses, as an estimated 2.1 billion fish including sardines and anchovies would have perished in the initial year alone to feed the confined octopuses, contributing to the devastation of fragile marine ecosystems and inflicting widespread suffering.
In light of this recent victory and the continuing threat of octopus farming, immediate action is necessary to safeguard these intelligent beings and their habitats. Supporting the Opposing the Cultivation and Trade of Octopus Produced Through Unethical Strategies (OCTOPUS) Act (S. 1947) is crucial to permanently halt commercial octopus farming in the United States and prevent the import of live or dead farmed octopuses from abroad. Therefore, it is imperative that lawmakers take this defining step to protect marine life and uphold ethical standards in food production.
