Target: Heath MacDonald, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada
Goal: Ensure accountability for Canadian companies in their failure to adopt cage-free egg production standards.
Canada’s animal welfare system continues to lag painfully behind that of other countries, with shocking statistics revealing a mere 21% cage-free egg production compared to 82% in the UK and 64% in the EU. This alarming data, as reported by the animal welfare organization Mercy For Animals, highlights a trend of broken promises by major retailers and food companies who pledged to eliminate battery cages but seemingly have made little progress over the past decade. Companies like Costco and Walmart Canada exhibit substantial discrepancies in their commitments, reporting only 22.6% and 9% of cage-free sourcing respectively in Canada, while they achieve significant progress in other markets.
Despite some companies fulfilling their cage-free commitments, the overall picture is grim, with many retailers, including Sobeys and Loblaw Companies, stagnating at low percentages of cage-free sourcing. The inclusion of “enriched cage” terminology by some organizations only serves to highlight the deep-rooted complacency within the industry. According to Mercy For Animals, the time for excuses is over; the intensity of suffering experienced by millions of animals under these inadequate living conditions calls for immediate action. The demand is clear: eliminate cage confinement, reject any forms of enriched caging as substitutes for cage-free sourcing, and adopt meaningful, enforceable commitments to change.
This petition urges the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada to take significant action against the failing practices of food companies that continue to harm animals, thereby ensuring that Canada does not remain an outlier in animal welfare standards. The time to hold companies accountable for their alleged failures to uphold humane treatment towards animals is now. We demand that the government steps in to enforce higher welfare standards and ensures compliance with cage-free egg production requirements.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Minister MacDonald,
The recent findings from Mercy For Animals present a stark reality: Canada’s progress towards cage-free egg production is abysmally low, with only 21% compliance reported. This stands in stark contrast to more progressive nations, such as the UK and the EU, where the numbers are significantly higher. This situation reflects not only poorly on our agricultural standards but also condemns millions of hens to unnecessary suffering in inhumane confinement conditions.
Many companies operating in Canada appear to make excuses instead of genuine progress, with some multinational brands demonstrating a shocking lack of commitment to animal welfare. It is unacceptable that while some companies report substantial advances in other regions, they fall flat in Canada, leaving consumers and welfare advocates disillusioned. Reports indicate that the animal welfare state remains largely unchanged, with a noticeable gap between corporate promises and actual implementation.
We urge you to take decisive action to hold these companies accountable for their failure to adhere to humane treatment standards. This includes implementing enforceable regulations that will eliminate cage confinement entirely and ensure the adoption of robust cage-free policies. It is imperative that Canada moves towards a future that respects animal welfare and aligns with global standards.
Sincerely,
