Fortunately, thanks to the efforts of animal welfare advocates and law enforcement, these monkeys have been transferred to the Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary, where they now have the opportunity to live healthy and fulfilling lives. However, such a transformation should not overshadow the gravity of the violations that occurred.
Following reports of atrocious conditions, an investigation led to the confiscation of 322 animals from the roadside zoo. The owner of West Coast Game Park Safari has pleaded guilty to 47 criminal charges, including 43 counts of neglecting the animals in his care. Although a prosecutor has recommended a 7.5 year prison term and restitution for the care of the rescued animals, it is crucial that the judicial system imposes the maximum penalty to reflect the severity of the offenses and deter future occurrences of such neglect at roadside zoos.
The punishment administered must send a strong message that animal neglect will not be tolerated. Every animal deserves to live free from pain and confinement.
