Stop Forcing Elephants to Perform in Circuses

Target: Brooke Rollins, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture

Goal: Save elephants like Viola for performing under seemingly cruel conditions for entertainment purposes.

The treatment of elderly elephants, such as 56-year-old Viola, by organizations like the Jordan World Circus demands immediate action. Viola, who has seemingly endured harsh conditions for over five decades, has tried to escape her situation at least four times, yet she was still compelled to participate in nearly 200 shows in 2025 alone. This apparently represents a systemic disregard for the welfare of sentient beings, and it is imperative that accountability is ensured.

The plight of elephants in circuses like the Jordan World Circus is perpetuated by leasing arrangements with notorious exhibitors, such as Carson & Barnes Circus. An expert report highlighted that Viola was “unable or unwilling to bend her right front wrist,” indicating the severity of the neglect and possible untreated injuries she suffers from. To protect elephants like Viola and ultimately end this unacceptable cruelty, it is necessary to hold those responsible for their exploitation accountable.

There must be a commitment to not only cease the abuse but also to retire elephants like Viola to accredited sanctuaries, where they can enjoy peaceful lives away from the spotlight of exploitation. The public demands that those who enforce the mistreatment of such majestic creatures be appropriately punished, and measures be implemented to prevent this from happening in the future.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Secretary Rollins,

The allegations of exploitation and abuse of elderly elephants like Viola by entities such as the Jordan World Circus are deeply alarming. Viola’s situation, where she was forced to participate in nearly 200 shows despite a history of attempts to escape, illustrates the urgent need for action. The physical and emotional toll on her and other elephants allegedly subjected to harsh conditions and violent training methods is inexcusable.

We respectfully demand that appropriate punishment be enforced against those who exploit and mistreat these animals. It is imperative that the USDA takes this matter seriously, holds accountable those responsible for the suffering of elephants, and implements necessary regulations to prevent such cruelty in the future.

Sincerely,
