Target: Ed Milliband, UK Energy Secretary
Goal: Do not install nuclear power plants around communities against wishes of residents.
Nuclear power plants could soon be coming to UK communities near millions of residents. An ambitious new plan by the United Kingdom’s Energy Secretary calls for “simplification” of regulations involving where nuclear plants can be built. Such “simplifying” and deregulation has rarely ended well for the health and well-being of rural regions typically selected when a large special interest wants to make its imprint free from watchful eyes.
The secretary has already essentially forecast what may come for less densely populated areas, as proposed new rules would enable the building of nuclear power facilities well-past the currently designated eight selected locations. The secretary is not bothered by “public concerns.” He vows such concerns will not hinder the development of plants that will most likely include smaller and untested modular reactors.

PETITION LETTER:
Dear Secretary Milliband,
Clean energy should be a priority, and your efforts to make such alternative sources – like wind and solar – a benchmark of the future are to be commended. But with progress cannot come an abandonment of public and environmental safety standards. Clean energy is beneficial because it can be a boon to public health and to environmental goals. Ignoring potential ramifications for one of the most controversial forms of energy, nuclear energy, is not the way to honor your goals.
The consumers who will be using this energy – and the communities most directly impacted by the plants that provide it – should not have their voices dismissed. Listen to the concerns of environmental advocates, community leaders, and the people as a whole. Don’t answer these concerns with a cold shoulder and a hardline deregulatory push towards unfettered and unchecked nuclear power plant development.
Sincerely,
