Don’t Let Suspected First-Degree Animal Abuser Go Unpunished

Target: Jody Newby, District Attorney of Coos County, Oregon

Goal: Prosecute to the fullest extent of the law the individual charged with first-degree animal abuse and ensure that any animal allegedly victimized in this case receives justice.

A man has been arrested and charged with first-degree animal abuse following a public tip-driven investigation that led to a search warrant being served at a private residence. The arrest came after members of the public provided several leads in response to a press release about an ongoing animal abuse investigation — leads that reportedly proved critical to advancing the case. The accused now faces not only the animal abuse charge, but also a charge of felon in possession of a firearm, raising serious questions about the nature of what investigators allegedly uncovered inside the residence.

First-degree animal abuse in Oregon represents the most serious classification of animal cruelty under state law, reserved for cases involving intentional acts that cause serious physical injury or death to an animal. The fact that investigators found sufficient evidence to seek and execute a search warrant — and to ultimately arrest the suspect on a first-degree charge — suggests that what allegedly took place at this residence was not a minor or accidental act of neglect, but rather something far more deliberate and severe. The animal or animals allegedly victimized in this case deserved protection that was purportedly denied to them.

Oregon law provides for meaningful criminal penalties in first-degree animal abuse cases, and the Coos County District Attorney’s Office has both the authority and the responsibility to pursue this case with the full force of those penalties. The public’s assistance in bringing this alleged abuser to justice demonstrates how seriously this community takes the welfare of animals — and the District Attorney must now match that resolve in the courtroom. Sign this petition to demand that the accused be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear District Attorney Jody Newby,

We are writing to urge your office to pursue the maximum penalties available under Oregon law against the individual arrested and charged with first-degree animal abuse following an investigation by the Coos County Sheriff’s Office. The arrest came after public tips helped investigators build a case that culminated in a search warrant being served at a private residence. The accused faces the additional charge of felon in possession of a firearm — a detail that underscores the seriousness of what investigators allegedly discovered during their search.

First-degree animal abuse is Oregon’s most serious animal cruelty charge, reserved for cases involving intentional acts causing serious physical injury or death to an animal. Whatever was allegedly done to the animal or animals involved in this case was serious enough to warrant a first-degree charge — and the victim or victims of this purported abuse deserve the full weight of the justice system to be brought to bear on their behalf. Animals cannot testify, file complaints, or advocate for themselves; they depend entirely on law enforcement and prosecutors to speak for them.

We respectfully but firmly demand that your office prosecute this case aggressively and pursue the strongest possible outcome under Oregon’s animal cruelty statutes. The community that provided the tips leading to this arrest is watching, and they deserve to see that their efforts resulted in meaningful accountability. Please ensure that the individual allegedly responsible for this act of animal abuse faces a sentence that reflects the gravity of what they are accused of doing.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
