Don’t Celebrate Animal Cruelty in Dog Competitions

Target: Jannine Edgar, CEO, Royal Kennel Club

Goal: Stop Crufts from glorifying extreme breeds and ensure individuals with animal cruelty convictions are barred from participating.

Animal charities are raising serious concerns after the recent winner of Crufts, a prestigious dog competition, was revealed to have a prior conviction for animal cruelty. Lee Cox, the winner with his Clumber spaniel named Bruin, has been associated with troubling reports of animal neglect, including a case where a spaniel under his care had to undergo surgery due to a chronic infection. Animal welfare organizations like the RSPCA and PETA have condemned the celebration of extreme breeds that have been bred for appearance rather than health, urging for a change to prevent animals from suffering as a consequence.

The winning dog, as highlighted by experts, is an example of a breed that has undergone extreme alterations leading to a myriad of health issues. These issues may include inability to breathe properly, chronic pain, and long-term health problems due to their exaggerated physical features. Despite this troubling reality, the continued awarding of prizes to such breeds normalizes and glamorizes these harmful traits. The history of Crufts is marred by instances of extreme breeds winning titles, which raises serious ethical questions about the competition’s practices.

Significant changes are necessary to protect animal welfare and ensure that those with a history of animal cruelty are not allowed to participate in such events. The call to action is clear: Crufts must discontinue awarding prizes to extreme breeds and implement rigorous vetting processes for all participants.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear CEO Edgar,

The recent controversy surrounding Crufts and its winner, Lee Cox, underlines a critical need for change in the way dog competitions are conducted. Cox has a past conviction for animal cruelty, raising questions about the suitability of individuals celebrated in such esteemed events. Furthermore, the winner’s breed exemplifies extreme characteristics that have led to significant welfare issues, highlighting a grim reality for many animals bred under these conditions.

Animal welfare groups have expressed valid concerns regarding the normalization of extreme breeds that suffer from a host of debilitating health problems, such as difficulty breathing and chronic pain. Each year, Crufts continues to showcase these breeds despite the clear evidence of their suffering, perpetuating a cycle of cruelty masquerading as competition. As experts have pointed out, rewarding such breeds fosters an environment that celebrates harmful traits rather than prioritizing animal health and wellbeing.

It is imperative that changes are implemented immediately. We ask you to support a ban on extreme breeds from competing and to ensure individuals with previous animal cruelty convictions are excluded from participating in Crufts. This is not only a necessary step for the welfare of the animals but also a way to restore integrity to the competition.

Sincerely,
