Fake Deworming Drugs Allegedly Supplied to Livestock: Seek Accountability

Target: Mukesh Kumar Meshram, Principal Secretary, Animal Husbandry Department, Uttar Pradesh, India

Goal: Ensure full investigation and strict legal action after deworming medicines were allegedly found fake, substandard, and potentially harmful to livestock health and farmer livelihoods.

A deeply concerning situation has emerged after laboratory testing revealed that deworming medicines supplied for livestock use may have failed to meet prescribed quality standards. The affected batch was reportedly distributed across multiple districts before authorities halted its use following complaints about reduced efficacy. Such alleged distribution of fake or substandard veterinary drugs may have exposed vulnerable animals to untreated parasitic disease, diminished productivity, and preventable suffering.

Further findings suggest that earlier procurement practices may also have involved irregularities, including ivermectin purchased at concentrations far above approved limits and at prices many times higher than market rates. These circumstances raise serious questions about oversight, approval procedures, and whether negligence or misconduct may have enabled non-compliant medicines to enter the veterinary supply chain.

Because livestock health directly affects rural livelihoods, dairy production, and food security, any compromise in drug quality demands transparent investigation and decisive accountability. Immediate enforcement action, supplier blacklisting where warranted, and strengthened pre-procurement testing are therefore essential to prevent recurrence and protect both animals and farmers.

PETITION LETTER:

Secretary Meshram,

We write to express grave concern regarding reports that deworming medicines supplied for livestock use were allegedly found to be fake or substandard during laboratory testing, after being distributed across several districts. Such alleged failures in drug quality may have left animals untreated, reduced productivity, and caused preventable harm to farmers who depend on healthy livestock.

Additional reports indicate possible procurement irregularities involving veterinary medicines purchased at unsafe concentrations and inflated prices, raising urgent concerns about oversight failures and potential misconduct within the approval process. These alleged circumstances threaten animal welfare, rural income stability, and public confidence in veterinary health systems.

We respectfully urge your office to conduct a comprehensive and transparent investigation, pursue strict legal action against any parties responsible, and implement mandatory quality verification safeguards before future procurement. Strong accountability and preventive reform are essential to protect livestock, farmers, and the integrity of animal health programs.

Sincerely,
