Don’t Let Carbon Market Collapse Decimate Global Climate Goals

Target: Xi Jinping, President of People’s Republic of China

Goal: Invest in innovation of global carbon markets to limit greenhouse gas-induced global warming.

Carbon markets, in which corporations and governments make investments in projects like forest restoration to offset their massive carbon footprints, was at one time viewed as a promising tool to combat global warming. But doubts about the effectiveness of the markets and major rollbacks of environmental initiatives from top planetary polluters have put these efforts in serious peril. The latest global meeting of nations that focused on climate change yielded little in the way of progress or renewed commitments to curbing carbon emissions.

The United Nations (UN) oversees one of the world’s major carbon market programs to invest in greenhouse gas-cutting initiatives in financially struggling countries. The UN has expressed deep concern because only European nations have committed to continuing this important program. China, the world’s top polluter, wants to become a global leader in green technologies but thus far has not pledged its support to the UN initiative.

Sign the petition below to urge this influential nation to live up to its ambitions.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Xi,

China’s cap-and-trade carbon markets could become a vital resource in this nation’s expanding green technology ambitions. But this opportunity cannot be fully realized without links to a global network. The UN’s clean development mechanism – which stands in imminent danger due to a lack of international investments – could be an important step in accessing that network if it is bolstered by innovative and effective technologies. Moreover, the People’s Republic’s commitment to the Kyoto protocol would signal its overall commitment to becoming a leader in the fight against climate change on the global stage.

As a major driver of pollution planetwide, this nation has both a calling and a duty to help the world reverse its dangerous course.

Sincerely,
