Invest in Eco-Friendly Construction to Reduce the Carbon Footprint

Target: Peter J. Davoren, President and CEO of Turner Construction Company

Goal: Prioritize green materials and energy efficiency in future building construction.

In just one year’s time, the demand for environmentally friendly green office buildings has plummeted to a meager 11 percent growth rate, in stark contrast to the 40 percent growth rate reported in other nations. The rampant dismantling of environmental regulations and guidelines is believed to be driving this lack of growth. As a consequence, just 16 percent of construction professionals take the amount of planet-polluting carbon released by their building materials into serious consideration.

Why does it matter? Fully one-third of carbon emissions across the planet are estimated to derive from buildings. Of this number, a quarter of the emissions come from building materials like concrete. Green buildings emphasize materials that do not leave a large carbon footprint. These buildings also incorporate other eco-friendly and energy-efficient design options, such as fewer windows and renewable energy alternatives.

Sign the petition below to demand construction industry leaders reaffirm their commitments to building better structures for a rapidly changing world.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Davoren,

The United States is quickly falling behind global construction industry trends toward green buildings. Incorporating less carbon-intensive building materials and more eco-friendly designs into construction unequivocally benefits the planet, as an estimated 34 percent of carbon emissions across Earth are a result of residential and commercial buildings. But these buildings can and do benefit consumers as well because they are more energy-efficient and drive down day-to-day costs.

As an industry leader and a recognized embracer of innovation, you can lead the way to long-term profit and sustainability by upping your investments in and promotion of green construction initiatives. Your clients, and the planet, will thank you.

Sincerely,
