Ensure School Kids’ Access to Healthy, Humane Plant-based Milk

Target: Linda McMahon, U.S. Secretary of Education

Goal: Ensure immediate and complete implementation of the policy allowing unfettered access to plant-based milk in all schools.

U.S. students across the country have gained a vital victory with the recent legislation allowing them access to dairy-free milk without requiring a doctor’s note. This significant change comes after years of restrictive policies that left many children who cannot or choose not to consume cow’s milk without vital nutrition options at school. Unfortunately, while some progress has been made regarding plant-based milk, there remain serious concerns about the prevalence of whole milk on school menus, despite its potential health risks due to high levels of saturated fat and its connection to the industrial dairy industry.

Previously, parents faced undue challenges in providing healthier options for their children due to the requirement of a physician’s note, effectively limiting the availability of soy milk and other dairy-free alternatives. Children with health, ethical, or religious reasons for avoiding cow’s milk had no proactive options available in their school meals. The recent amendment to allow plant-based milk without a medical exemption is an essential step forward, yet ongoing vigilance and enforcement are required to ensure these changes are implemented uniformly and without delay in every school across the nation.

Immediate and thorough enforcement of the new policy is crucial to guarantee that every student can access nutritious plant-based options while also addressing concerns regarding the reintegration of whole milk into school nutrition programs. It is imperative that all stakeholders take meaningful action to ensure every educational institution recognizes, prioritizes, and implements these changes swiftly and effectively.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Secretary McMahon,

The recent amendment allowing U.S. students access to plant-based milk without a doctor’s note represents a significant victory for children’s health and well-being. Many students previously faced overwhelming barriers in accessing nutritious alternatives due to a requirement for physician documentation. This change means that children who cannot or choose not to drink cow’s milk for myriad reasons can now enjoy school meals that cater to their needs.

The prior restrictions on dairy-free milk access led to children being denied their preferred nutrition options, thus leaving a substantial gap in their diet. While this amendment marks an essential shift towards inclusive nutrition choices, there must be a comprehensive and immediate rollout to ensure every school embraces this change. Students deserve the right to choose what they consume during their school day, particularly when healthier alternatives are available.

We respectfully urge your leadership to enforce the policy ensuring plant-based milk is readily available in all schools without delay. Every child deserves access to nutritious meals that align with their dietary needs and ethical beliefs, and it is crucial that all educational institutions comply with this imperative change swiftly.

Sincerely,
