Stop Sidelining America in Consequential Climate Crisis Battles

Target: John Thune, U.S. Senate Majority Leader

Goal: Recommit to international fight against global warming and climate change.

The United States is continuing to isolate itself from its long-time allies. The president recently announced that the nation was withdrawing its membership from over five dozen international organizations. Many of these global partnerships are crucial to the fight against climate change.

After ending U.S. involvement with the Paris Climate Accord earlier in his term, President Trump has added the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Green Climate Fund, the International Renewable Energy Treaty, and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to the list of American abandonments. These treaties and partnerships are the centerpieces of efforts to mitigate the impacts of planet-warming greenhouse gasses, of clean energy investments, and of preparing humanity to withstand the consequences of volatile natural disasters wrought by climate change. Meanwhile, the planet’s second largest polluter and its leaders are now fully in the pockets of fossil fuel conglomerates and are constantly dismissing the very demonstrable effects of the climate crisis as a hoax.

Questions remain about the legality of this full-throated assault of science by the leader of the free world, as Congress played an instrumental role in cementing many of these partnerships. Sign the petition below to demand elected representatives of the people push back against dangerous U.S. isolationism.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Senator Thune,

The Senate helped forge many international partnerships that the executive branch has just destroyed. Over 65 global organizational memberships and treaties were ended in one fell swoop by the president. With the U.S. withdrawal from global pacts like the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, America will suffer from its isolationist posturing. More consequentially, the world will suffer as its second largest polluter essentially throws up its hands and says, “So what?” to unprecedented and climate-induced global catastrophes.

Will you let China and other adversaries take the reins of leadership in renewable energy? Will you continue to inform allies in no uncertain terms that the United States is no longer a trusted partner? Will you let the world burn in service to power and to special interests? Or will you take back your control and restore the world’s faith in America? Make things right, reenter these longstanding partnerships, and show the executive branch and the American people that the United States is committed to a clean, stable, and healthy future.

Sincerely,
