Target: Anthony Albanese, Prime Minister of Australia
Goal: Do not indirectly enrich Russia and its invasion of Ukraine.
The multi-year Russian invasion of Ukraine has resulted in enormous destruction, death, and relentless attacks that continue daily. Several nations have opted to weaken Russia’s massive oil industry as a means of leverage. But some countries are finding loopholes that call into question their supposed stand against Russian aggression.
Australia, for example, joined several allies in ending direct purchases of oil that originated from Russia. But despite this action, an estimated three million tons and counting of Russian oil have still found their way into Australia. The money made from this oil likely goes directly into funding Russia’s military terror. Much of the oil was purchased from countries like Singapore that still make heavy investments in Russian oil (to the tune of 22 million tons for Singapore alone). Unlike other allies, Australia did not extend its ban to third-party sellers that do business with Russia.
Sign the petition below to demand leadership close a loophole that enables an aggressor to continue a campaign of ruthless invasion.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Prime Minister Albanese,
Ukraine has suffered for a century at the hands of aggressors and oppressors, from the Soviet-driven Holodomor Ukrainian famine to the nearly four-year-long invasion perpetuated by Russia. During the former tragedy, the region experienced widespread denial and skepticism from nations and people that should have been allies. Many of these allies would go on to provide indirect support to the oppressors.
Do not let history repeat itself. Turning a blind eye to the continued importation of Russian oil into Australia does not erase the harsh reality that profits from this oil are going into the coffers of Russian leadership. These profits finance military attacks and the kind of theft that made the Holodomor so devastating. If Australia is serious in its vow not to fund such aggression, then it will join other nations in banning oil purchases from third-party countries that still support the Russian war machine.
Anything less will leave this country with oil-stained blood on its hands.
Sincerely,
[Your Name Here]
