Target: Lade Smith, President of Royal College of Psychiatrists
Goal: Do not turn a blind eye to reported human rights abuses in a nation selected for psychiatrist training.
During their careers, psychiatrists treat a wide range of individuals, many of whom deal with systemic oppression. Yet the organization responsible for certifying and leading psychiatrists in the United Kingdom has decided to partner in training with a country under fire for reported human rights abuses. Over 150 members of the Royal College of Psychiatrists have spoken out in condemnation.
The college recently signed off on an agreement with Qatar in which international exams hosting students all over the globe would be held in the country. These exams would involve simulations of sessions between psychiatrists and patients on a wide range of issues, including issues prohibited or downplayed in Qatar. The nation received significant backlash for its alleged horrific treatment of migrant workers who had worked on World Cup construction projects. In addition, Qatar has been the subject of criticism for its criminalization of same-sex relationships and its lacking legal protections for victims of domestic violence.
Representatives of the college have dismissed and defended against these criticisms. Sign the petition below to demand they start listening.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Dr. Smith,
Homophobia, gender-based violence, and cultural oppression are some of the modern-day issues psychiatrists will confront in their day-to-day practices. Why is this institution partnering with leaders who have open hostility toward the communities most impacted by these issues? And why is it standing against its stated values and principles by endorsing and enriching said leaders? Would you make the same concessions for Nazi Germany?
The Qatar partnership is anything but “anti-discriminatory and evidence based.” You cannot and should not ignore the very real concerns expressed by over 150 of your members. Do not be complicit with your silence. Let Qatari leaders know that in the absence of systemic and real change, the Royal College of Psychiatrists is not open for business.
Sincerely,
