Goal: Support fight against gerrymandering that intentionally excludes minority voters.
Texas representatives recently kicked off a nationwide redistricting – or gerrymandering – battle across the nation. Under pressure from the president, the representatives pulled a surprise move and redrew Congressional maps that were supposed to remain in place for years to come. The newly drawn maps would have given the state’s Republican majority party a likely five additional seats in the House of Representatives. Other states quickly followed suit, taking an ever-increasing amount of power from the people and putting it in the hands of politicians who could selectively choose their own constituents instead of the other way around. This ForceChange petition highlighted the troubling domino effect. Lawsuits were brought, and this unethical power grab appears on the verge of unraveling.
A panel of federal judges in Texas has blocked the new map from being used in upcoming midterm elections. The ruling is in response to a lawsuit brought by racial minority voters who argued that the new map would diminish their influence and their voices. The panel agreed. A Trump-appointed judge said in the ruling: “The public perception of this case is that it’s about politics. To be sure, politics played a role in drawing the 2025 Map. But it was much more than just politics. Substantial evidence shows that Texas racially gerrymandered the 2025 Map.” Since the Congressional map to be used for midterms must be approved and in place within weeks, the likelihood of a new gerrymandered map coming into play before midterms is rapidly diminishing.

PETITION LETTER:
Dear Ms. Khanna,
“Today’s decision is a critical victory for voting rights and a powerful rebuke of Texas’s brazen attempt to dilute the political power of Latino and Black voters.” Your words in regard to the federal court ruling concerning Texas redistricting reinforces why this action is so important. When the power transfers from the voters to their representatives, democracy suffers. Ensuring fair and balanced Congressional maps is crucial for preventing this outcome.
Thank you, and please continue standing up for the Voting Rights Act and the U.S. Constitution.
Sincerely,
