Demand Justice for Reported Deaths of Twenty-Two Macaque Monkeys

Target: South Carolina Department of Agriculture Commissioner Hugh Weathers

Goal: Hold facility accountable for repeated alleged animal welfare violations and ensure appropriate punishment for anyone responsible for the escape and deaths of numerous monkeys.

Last November, a shocking incident allegedly unfolded in Yemassee, South Carolina, as dozens of macaques escaped from Alpha Genesis, a major primate breeding facility. Reports indicate that this incident was not isolated; the facility has a troubling history of escape attempts, animal neglect, and inadequate oversight, with at least sixty-seven prior incidents over the past decade. Tragically, following the escape, twenty-two macaques apparently died due to a malfunctioning heater in their enclosure, raising urgent questions about the facility’s animal welfare policies.

The facility was responsible for housing thousands of primates yet has repeatedly demonstrated a seeming inability to maintain adequate safety measures to prevent escapes. Witnesses reported that the employees, undertrained and inexperienced, left gates unsecured, leading to the escape of forty-three primates, many of whom were newly arrived. Following these events, a whistleblower shared what appears to be disturbing evidence of chronic negligence, including incidents of malnourishment, severe injuries, and even preventable deaths among the animals.

This petition demands accountability and appropriate punishment for any employees and management of Alpha Genesis responsible for blatant violations of animal welfare laws. Given the alarming history of escapes, neglectful treatment of the animals, and the unnecessary loss of life, urgent action must be taken to prevent further incidents and ensure that such practices are addressed to protect these sentient beings.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Commissioner Hugh Weathers,

The recent reported escape of forty-three monkeys from Alpha Genesis, coupled with the tragic death of twenty-two primates due to negligence, highlights what appears to be a severe ongoing crisis in animal welfare management at this facility. Alpha Genesis allegedly has a documented history of at least sixty-seven prior escape incidents, which raises serious concerns regarding its operational protocols. The information suggests that this latest exodus might stem from either incompetence or possibly intentional actions, further emphasizing the need for thorough investigation and action.

Moreover, whistleblower accounts have outlined a pattern of neglectful practices within Alpha Genesis, including insufficient feeding, inadequate medical treatment, and reckless handling of animals leading to severe injuries and fatalities. These reports are deeply concerning and necessitate immediate scrutiny and intervention to hold those responsible accountable for their actions and deter similar misconduct in the future.

It is imperative that effective measures are instituted to enforce stringent accountability for the management at Alpha Genesis. The demand is simple: hold accountable those individuals at Alpha Genesis who have allegedly committed acts of negligence and ensure that such facility practices are comprehensively reviewed and addressed.

Sincerely,
