Stop Congress From Overturning State Animal Welfare Laws

Target: Rep. Glenn Thompson, Chair of the U.S. House Agriculture Committee

Goal: Stop the EATS Act from undermining animal welfare protections and family farming practices.

The EATS Act poses an alarming threat to the progress made in animal welfare and family farming, seeking to nullify crucial protections like California’s Proposition 12. This proposition, passed by voter ballot, aims to reduce suffering for farmed animals by banning inhumane practices such as gestation crates for mother pigs and cages for hens. Farmers from across the nation rallied on Capitol Hill to oppose the EATS Act, which undermines not only animal welfare but also the rights of states to implement their own agricultural standards as voted by the public.

Evidence of the damage this act could bring is clear, as family farmers are standing united against it, fearing that federal overreach will wipe out essential state laws meant to ensure humane treatment of animals and sustainable practices. The EATS Act has been rebranded multiple times in an apparent attempt to disguise its true nature, but its implications remain unchanged: a direct threat to the welfare of animals and sustainable farming. More than 200 farmers recently gathered in Washington, D.C. to oppose the bill, demonstrating that the federal government should not interfere with state legislation that aims to protect both animals and consumers.

It is imperative to demand that lawmakers reject the EATS Act and similar legislation to maintain public health standards and ensure the ethical treatment of animals. Families relying on responsible farming practices deserve the support of their representatives, not legislation that threatens their livelihoods and the welfare of animals. The demand is clear: stop the EATS Act and uphold the rights of states to promote humane agricultural practices.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Chair Thompson,

The EATS Act presents an urgent threat to animal welfare and family farmers, seeking to overturn state-level standards established through public voting, including California’s Proposition 12. This proposition is designed to mitigate suffering for farmed animals by prohibiting inhumane crating practices. The EATS Act represents a direct assault on significant advancements in animal treatment, effectively undermining the will of the voters who seek to protect animals and uphold ethical farming practices.

Farmers from across the nation have voiced their opposition, rallying in Washington, D.C., and clearly articulating their concerns about the implications of this act. By attempting to remove state-level agricultural protections, the EATS Act jeopardizes not only animal welfare but also the sustainability of family farms, which are essential to our food system and rural communities.

To protect our food system, uphold animal welfare standards, and respect the rights of states to legislate in the interest of their communities, it is vital to reject the EATS Act and any similar legislation. The protection of animals, public health, and sustainable farming practices depend on this decisive action.

Sincerely,
