Demand Justice After Reports of Roosters Tied to Barrels for Fighting and Dogs Found Emaciated

Target: Andrew Nester, Commonwealth’s Attorney of Henry County, Virginia

Goal: Seek the maximum lawful sentence, restitution, and a lifetime animal-ownership ban for the individual allegedly responsible for starving dogs, tethering 28 roosters to barrels, and maintaining animals for apparent fighting purposes.

Authorities reportedly uncovered a heartbreaking scene at a rural property where multiple species were found in dire condition. Deputies allegedly discovered four Great Pyrenees dogs in poor shape, including one with severe hair loss and open sores without shelter, along with goats described as underweight and in need of care. Investigators also say they found 28 roosters tied to barrels without water, with sharpened spurs and visible injuries that strongly suggest exploitation for fighting. Inside nearby structures, deputies purportedly seized dozens of knives, gaffs, leg tape, and supplements commonly associated with cockfighting.

The suspect has been arrested and now faces numerous counts of animal cruelty and a count tied to animal fighting. Additional charges are anticipated after more roosters and implements were allegedly located on a return visit. Veterinary assessments reportedly confirmed malnourishment and skin disease among the dogs, while cats and goats on scene also appeared thin or in distress.

To deter future offenses and protect animals and the community, this case demands firm action. Prosecutors should pursue the maximum penalties allowed by law, require restitution for rescue and medical costs, mandate psychological evaluation and counseling, and secure a lifetime prohibition on owning, keeping, or living with animals. Robust, court-enforceable conditions, including forfeiture of all seized animals and bans on possessing animal-fighting paraphernalia, are also essential.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Commonwealth’s Attorney Nester,

We are writing regarding the Henry County case in which deputies reportedly found four Great Pyrenees dogs in poor condition, underweight goats, thin cats, and 28 roosters tied to blue barrels without water—some with sharpened spurs and visible injuries. Investigators also purportedly seized dozens of knives, gaffs, leg tape, supplements, and other materials indicative of organized cockfighting. Additional birds and implements were reportedly discovered on a return visit.

Veterinary findings seemingly confirmed malnourishment and untreated skin disease among the dogs, while other animals on the property appeared neglected. These details suggest prolonged suffering and apparent preparation for illegal animal combat, which carries profound public-safety and animal-welfare implications.

We respectfully urge your office to pursue the maximum lawful sentence upon conviction, along with restitution to cover veterinary, sheltering, and investigative costs. We also ask that you seek a lifetime prohibition on owning, keeping, or residing with animals, mandatory psychological evaluation and counseling, forfeiture of all seized animals, and court-enforceable bans on possessing any animal-fighting paraphernalia. Strong outcomes in cases like this deter future cruelty and safeguard vulnerable animals.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
