Success: Scales of Justice Tip Back to the People

Target: Lee Gelernt, Counsel for American Civil Liberties Union

Goal: Support efforts to combat executive overreach and abuse of power in cases directly impacting lives and livelihoods.

The Trump administration has been accused of abusing its power to impede on the rights of individuals multiple times and in multiple venues. This ForceChange petition highlighted some of the instances of concern. But an increasing number of court rulings against the administration and in favor of Americans’ rights show that accountability is not entirely lost.

Several of these rulings involved the rights of international residents. When the Trump administration tried to block foreign students from attending Harvard University, a U.S. District Court judge struck down the plan, ruling “this case is about core constitutional rights that must be safeguarded: freedom of thought, freedom of expression, and freedom of speech, each of which is a pillar of a functioning democracy and an essential hedge against authoritarianism.” In a separate case, the decision by the administration to punish one of the world’s premier research institutions by blocking research funding for Harvard was likewise ruled unlawful.

Other rulings have taken to task the administration’s stationing of federal troops in Los Angeles, the twisting of an outdated law to justify deportations without due process, and even the justifications for widespread tariffs imposed on dozens of countries. Sign the petition below to thank the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) for spearheading many of these consequential cases.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Gelernt,

“The stakes could not be higher.” You made this statement in regards to the ACLU’s vigorous fight against illegal usage of the Alien Enemies Act by the Trump administration. The ACLU has emerged as a leading figure in securing wins for the people in this high-stakes series of games.

Thank you for this continued vigilance, and please keep up the good fight.

Sincerely,
