Target: Melissa Hardy, Nevada State Assembly Member
Goal: Support enhanced preventive framework and stronger legal actions against animal cruelty .
When a small chihuahua was discovered abandoned but alive in a Las Vegas dumpster, the incident stirred haunting memories of another Nevada dog who inspired a statewide movement. Reba the bulldog’s harrowing story was recounted in this ForceChange petition, which called for justice for this fallen animal and so many like her. After nearly a year-long odyssey, Reba’s legacy will live on to safeguard other vulnerable beings.
Shortly after Reba’s story became public knowledge, impassioned advocates pressed the Nevada legislature for stronger statewide animal welfare standards. Their efforts resulted in a proposed bill named Reba’s law. The legislation would make animal cruelty a felony offense regardless of circumstances. It also significantly increased sentences for convictions and instituted wider bans on animal ownership for convicted offenders. Furthermore, anyone convicted of animal cruelty would be placed on a statewide registry. And much like cases involving child abuse, mandatory reporting of suspected abuse would become integral to the law as well.
Hope seemed lost when the bill seemingly died in the legislature early in 2025. But after an intense outcry, legislators revived the bill. It was signed into law near the anniversary of Reba’s death.
Sign the petition below to thank the assemblywoman whose tireless advocacy made this breakthrough possible.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Assemblywoman Hardy,
Because of your unwavering efforts, Nevada has transformed from a state with lacking protections for its vulnerable animals to a state that serves as a model for others to follow. The passage of Reba’s Law marks a win for justice and a win for animal welfare. If Reba is a guardian angel for animals, you have become her living messenger.
Thank you for never giving up the fight.
Sincerely,
