Baby Lynx Orphaned After Dog Attack: Demand Accountability

Target: Corey Meadows, Chief Conservation Officer for Manitoba, Canada

Goal: Identify and appropriately penalize any parties who allowed a dog to kill a mother lynx, and require restitution to support the orphaned kitten’s care and rehabilitation.

A baby lynx—believed to be about 20 weeks old—was rescued after her mother was killed in a dog attack. The young cat is now facing a long, precarious recovery that includes surgery for an eye injury and months of specialized nutrition and support. Wildlife caregivers say her prognosis is optimistic, but her survival will demand intensive, costly care.

This is the facility’s first-ever baby lynx patient. Staff describe the kitten as timid but increasingly curious—traits that underscore her youth and vulnerability. She will remain under care until at least spring to learn the skills she needs to live wild. Meanwhile, the dog attack that created this crisis deserves a thorough investigation and, if warranted, meaningful consequences.

Allowing dogs to harass or kill wildlife is not only cruel, but also unlawful. In cases like this, swift accountability can deter future harm to endangered or sensitive native animals and help protect communities. Sign below to demand authorities determine whether leash, containment, or wildlife-harassment rules were violated and, if the evidence supports it, seek the maximum penalties available. Restitution be pursued to cover the kitten’s veterinary treatment and rehabilitation as well. Humane coexistence demands more than sympathy; it requires enforcement.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Chief Meadows,

A juvenile lynx is now in intensive care after her mother was killed in a dog attack near Swan River. The kitten, said to be about 20 weeks old, needs surgery for an eye injury and will require months of specialized nutrition and rehabilitation before she can be released.

This disturbing situation—an adult lynx killed by an uncontrolled dog—raises serious concerns about potential violations of leash and wildlife-protection requirements. Such conduct not only inflicts cruel harm on native wildlife, but also undermines public confidence in responsible pet ownership.

We respectfully urge you to conduct a thorough investigation, identify any responsible parties, and, where supported by the evidence, seek the strongest penalties allowed by law. We further request that you pursue restitution to help cover the orphaned lynx’s medical care and rehabilitation, and reinforce prevention through targeted public education and, as needed, enhanced enforcement in the area.

Thank you for acting to ensure that those responsible are held to account and that Manitoba’s wildlife is protected.

Sincerely,
