Break Earth’s Fever with Promising Innovations

Target: Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of International Monetary Fund

Goal: Invest in novel solutions to combat climate change and global warming.

Glacial melting has surpassed even the most pessimistic expectations of scientists, with melt rates currently doubling from what had been predicted. The disintegration of glaciers is rapidly diminishing the world’s supply of fresh water, of which glacial ice comprises two-thirds of said supply. This loss also strikes at the very heart of ecosystems and takes away a key planetary tool for temperature regulation. And large-scale melts pose a significant danger to coastal regions in the crosshairs of rising sea levels.

For these reasons and more, a network of concerned experts recently convened for the Arctic Repair Conference. During the meeting, these scientists evaluated dozens of options for mitigating catastrophic ice loss in the wake of continued failures by world leaders to honor climate protection goals. The proposals included ideas once considered science fiction, such as using large “space mirrors” to redirect sunlight from impacted areas and a potential intervention that has gained the most traction, which would involve charging marine clouds with tiny particles. Unfortunately, often baseless fears have caused a flurry of legal actions against such methods, as recently occurred when a small-scale project was banned by politicians in Alameda County, California and when geo-engineering projects as a whole were banned in Tennessee.

The major takeaway from the conference gathering is that ideas with the greatest chance of success need to be built up and tested sooner rather than later. Sign the petition below to encourage global investment in outside-the-box solutions that could help avert a planetary date with disaster.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Director Georgieva,

Solutions for a Warming World: this subtitle encapsulated the mission of the recently convened Arctic Repair Conference. This meeting united the world’s foremost minds in glacial melting for a shared goal of curbing one of the most alarming consequences of global warming and climate change. Dozens of proposals were examined, with the goal of moving forward with a much smaller pool of sustainable ideas.

With stated climate goals quickly falling by the wayside and conspiracy theories about geo-engineering causing panic-driven policy decisions, time is of the essence if the planet wishes to avoid the wide-ranging catastrophes that will result from accelerated glacial collapse. But robust investment is essential if proposals with the highest reward and lowest risk ever have hope of being deployed and implemented on a large scale. Make this investment for the sake of all life on Earth.

Sincerely,
