Target: Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla
Goal: Publicize Robotaxi data of interest to consumers and regulators.
Surpassing the speed limit; braking suddenly and for no reason; dropping passengers off at busy intersections, driving on the wrong side of the road: any of these incidents could yield a taxi driver a one-star review or even a ticket from authorities. For Tesla’s newly launched Robotaxi service, however, such incidents appear to be part of a troubling pattern of traffic violations. Users on social media who were invited to test the service in Texas have posted videos seemingly documenting all of the above instances.
The Robotaxi is a self-driving car that has no one in the driver’s seat. For the test runs, a driver does appear to be present into the passenger seat in order to override any potential safety concerns. But the number or degree of these concerns have not been shared with the public or reportedly even with local officials. The lack of transparency regarding crucial data has led to more criticism of the dangers this technology could pose to consumers.
With Tesla’s plans to expand the service to other areas of the country, these concerns must be addressed. Sign the petition below to demand Tesla coordinate with safety officials and regulators to ensure the lowest level of risk for consumers.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Mr. Musk,
Phantom braking – an issue that has plagued other Tesla automotive technology – is one of the multiple glitches testers of the Robotaxi have reported. Experts in autonomous driving have indicated these issues could signal a design flaw. Before this venture can proceed, consumers must have confidence that they will not be placed in harm’s way.
More training should occur before a wider rollout commences. And the best means of assuaging concerns of the public and of regulators is to be transparent. Release data involving error rates, miles catalogued, and other information of importance. Then, work with officials to make certain the Robotaxi is in full compliance with the safety thresholds expected of any vehicle.
Sincerely,
