Curb Threat of Nuclear War

Target: Irfaan Ali, Acting President of United Nations (UN) Security Council

Goal: Promote aims of nuclear disarmament in response to growing global conflicts between nuclear-armed nations.

India and Pakistan, nations with three wars and multiple conflicts between them, suspended their latest dangerous escalation in May of 2025. Four days of air strike exchanges between the countries followed in the wake of a terrorist attack in the hotly contested region of Kashmir. The two sides later announced that they had agreed to pause the fighting…for now.

Meanwhile, another potentially consequential military intervention flared up between Israel and Iran. Israel launched airstrikes against Iranian facilities Israeli leaders have accused of nuclear weapon-building. Iran responded with its own airstrikes. What do these conflicts have in common, aside from mutual long-simmering tensions between nations?

India, Pakistan, and Israel are all believed to be equipped with a nuclear weapons arsenal. Iran may one day join them. The potential for an all-out nuclear war – and the devastating ramifications for the rest of the world – cannot be overstated.

Sign the petition below to urge the world’s leading international body to recommit and strengthens its aims of nuclear disarmament.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Ali,

The haunting aura of atomic and nuclear weapons in the wake of Hiroshima and Nagasaki compelled the then-newly formed United Nations to adopt nuclear disarmament as its first resolution in 1946. Since then, initiatives like the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty and the Treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons have been lynchpins in the United Nations’ continued efforts to protect global populations from one of their greatest existential threats. Bodies such as the Office for Disarmament Affairs, the International Atomic Energy Agency, and the UN Security Council — over which you currently preside — have played pivotal roles.

But as the Secretary-General recently stated: “Humanity is on a knife’s edge. The risk of a nuclear weapon being used has reached heights not seen since the Cold War.” Recent escalations between India, Pakistan, Israel, and Iran have reaffirmed this danger. It is time for the world’s foremost governing body to respond in kind.

Nuclear disarmament of all – and the elimination of the 12,000-plus weapons still posing an apocalyptic threat – must become an urgent and prominent focus of future discussions. Please advocate strongly for this focus. The Doomsday Clock is no longer a theoretical but a self-fulfilling prophecy that must be stopped.

Sincerely,
