Close Lab Where Animals Were Reportedly Crammed in Cages, Stuffed in Bags, and Killed With Injections

Target: Dr Abhijit Mitra, Chair, Committee for the Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals, India

Goal: Revoke license of facility accused of keeping monkeys, dogs, piglets, and other animals in unlivable conditions.

Dozens of whistle-blower photos, videos, and testimonies allegedly reveal a pattern of shocking cruelty inside a registered animal-testing laboratory. According to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India, roughly 1,500 beagles were crammed into cages built for half that number, many left with untreated abscesses, ulcers, and infections after test compounds were injected into their bodies. Piglets were purportedly killed by painful heart injections without anesthesia, while wild-caught monkeys were reportedly stuffed into plastic bags for transport. Two animals apparently contracted monkeypox, yet experiments continued.

Former employees further claim the lab ignored basic veterinary care, bred dogs far beyond legal limits, and routinely kicked or slammed cage doors on terrified animals. These actions, if verified, would violate India’s Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and rules designed to safeguard laboratory animals. PETA India has asked regulators to cancel the company’s registration and re-home all remaining animals in sanctuaries or adoptive homes.

A decisive response is essential. Allowing a facility accused of such extreme, repeated breaches to continue operating would undermine public trust and embolden other abusers. Closing the lab, prosecuting responsible parties, and prioritizing non-animal research methods would affirm India’s commitment to humane science and the law.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Dr Mitra,

PETA India has reportedly provided your office with extensive evidence—videos, photographs, and insider statements—suggesting chronic, severe abuse of animals at a privately run research facility. Accounts describe beagles left bleeding from untreated injection wounds, piglets killed by unsedated intracardiac injections, and monkeys captured illegally and confined in plastic bags. These claims, if proven, constitute grave breaches of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and CCSEA regulations.

We respectfully urge the Committee to suspend and then cancel this facility’s license, initiate criminal proceedings against all responsible parties, and coordinate with reputable rescue groups to transfer every surviving animal to safe, fully vetted homes or sanctuaries. We further ask that any future applications by the same owners or management be denied, and that the CCSEA strengthen oversight to prevent similar tragedies.

India has the opportunity to set a global standard by enforcing its laws and promoting modern, animal-free research methods. We implore you to act swiftly and decisively in the interests of justice and compassion.

Sincerely,
