Stop the Cruel #BarkYourMind Challenge

Target: Show Zi Chew, CEO of TikTok

Goal: End the promotion of harmful challenges on social media that subject pets to cruel treatment.

A distressing trend is emerging on social media wherein unsuspecting dogs are subjected to icy water in a twisted adaptation of the once charitable ice bucket challenge. This alarming variation, referred to as the #barkyourmindchallenge, has sparked outrage from animal welfare organizations and has raised serious concerns over the welfare of pets. Individuals are replicating the original challenge, which aimed to promote awareness about ALS, to humiliate and endanger their pets, treating them not as companions but as mere props for social media clout.

Animal rights advocates have condemned this cruel and reckless behavior, highlighting the significant psychological harm it can cause to pets. Jason Baker from PETA stressed that such actions represent an “appalling betrayal” of dogs’ trust, leading to confusion and fear. The head of behavior at Blue Cross, Ryan Neile, underscored the disturbing nature of the videos being shared, which abuse the trust pets place in their guardians. The data shows that this trend is gaining traction on platforms like TikTok, prompting immediate calls for accountability and action to prevent further instances of perceived animal abuse.

It is imperative that social media platforms take responsibility for policing content that harms animals and promotes unethical treatment. Continued promotion of these harmful challenges could result in growing trends that endanger more pets across the country. Changing these detrimental patterns is crucial for advancing compassion and empathy towards animals in today’s increasingly digital landscape. Therefore, a visible and enforceable stance against such behavior is necessary to protect the well-being of voiceless companions.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear CEO Show Ze Chew,

The recent emergence of the #barkyourmindchallenge on your platform, wherein participants pour freezing water over their pets, raises serious concerns regarding the treatment of animals in an environment that should promote compassion and ethical behavior. Animal welfare organizations have described this trend as “egregiously cruel,” highlighting the psychological distress caused to dogs subjected to such mistreatment. These actions leave pets, who are unable to comprehend their owners’ motivations, confused and terrified.

Concern from experts, including Jason Baker from PETA, emphasizes the appalling betrayal of trust that these actions represent. It has been observed that these videos not only harm the pets directly involved but also risk encouraging similar behaviors among others who might seek validation through likes and shares. With the nature of social media allowing harmful trends to proliferate rapidly, it is vital to take immediate corrective measures.

There is a clear need for TikTok to adopt a stricter policy against content that promotes animal abuse or mistreatment. As advocates for animal welfare continue to voice their alarm, it is imperative to prioritize the protection of these vulnerable beings. Ending the promotion of challenges that endanger pets is necessary for safeguarding their well-being and ensuring that social media serves as a platform for respect and kindness.

Sincerely,

As an older person who grew up without so much as a calculator, i predict that the younger generation living in their virtual world, is the start of the demise of civilisation. Kindness and compassion are disappearing, and cruelty to animals associated with social media is rapidly rising and becoming more heinous. Eventually civilisation will collapse, because it is, by its definition, founded upon moral values. Younger people are becoming amoral, lazy, selfish and cruel. Social media platforms – which I have never felt the need to subscribe to (because I have a life!) – are promoting and enabling violence and horrible torture of animals for their own profit. This world would be far better if the WWW had never been invented. Cruelty is spreading rapidly, and the law MUST stamp it out, and MUST get a lot tougher and clamp down on these companies who make money by allowing such vile clips to be shown, in order to preserve civilisation.
In addition to innocent animals, these cruel people are highly likely to target other people and children. Dousing pets in ice cold water is only the start, there are already many instances of much, much worse! PARENTS MUST STOP KIDS WATCHING VIOLENT ONLINE GAMES AND VIDEOS! They think it is ok to be cruel and torture a living, sentient creature to death! BAN social media and BAN that kind of violent content from TV and any other platform.
People who breed any kind of pets, whether dogs, cats or anything else, have a moral duty to STOP! you are bringing too many animals into the world without enough people to care for them. hundreds of thousands of dogs are euthanised in the USA alone every year. The LAW MUST BAN dog and cat breeding, it is making money or indulging a hobby based upon the suffering of countless animals and is completely evil! people should not live from blood money!!

I couldn’t agree more, Lesley. This world is unrecognisable compared to the world I grew up in. I am not saying that animal abuse did not exist years ago, because it certainly did but now no one is ever properly punished for their crimes, which are usually blamed on the “mental health” of the perpetrator, so not their fault. The criminal always has “human rights” but the victim never has, oddly enough. Children must not be chastised or corrected in any way and, as a result there are many vile, out of control little scum bags out there…..I could go on and on….and on….

  2. Drown all these fuckwits in tubs of freezing water. FFS
If you can do this sort of thing to your pets… what else will you do for likes??? They DON’T love their pets!!!!
GROW THE FUCK UP & STOP TORTURING ANIMALS..
    SPINELESS PUTRID DEADSHITS!

  3. Tik Tok is a very real problem when it comes to showing and encouraging animal abuse. The Chinese want us to believe they are sophiticated and civilized and yet they don’t stop Tik Tok from showing and promoting animal abuse? Stand up for China’s animals, stop TIK TOK from abusing animals by promoting their abuse on it’s sites.
