Demand Justice for Dogs Allegedly Abandoned to Die Exposed to the Elements

Target: Margaret E. Kelley, State’s Attorney for the Ansonia-Milford Judicial District, Connecticut

Goal: Secure the maximum jail sentence, stiff fines, and a lifetime ban on animal ownership for whoever allegedly abandoned two small dogs—one fatally injured, the other left caged in pouring rain.

Two horrifying acts of apparent cruelty have rocked the Shelton community in rapid succession. An electrician reportedly discovered a small dog crammed into a wire cage at a construction site, drenched and shivering after hours of exposure to driving rain. Just one day later—and only a few miles away—another small Maltese-mix was allegedly dumped in a carrier at the end of a driveway. The second dog’s injuries were reportedly so catastrophic that veterinarians had no choice but to euthanize the suffering animal.

Authorities say these incidents are part of a troubling rise in animal-abuse crimes across the state. Advocates warn that abusers too often receive lenient penalties, fostering a climate where defenseless pets can be harmed with little fear of real consequences. A local nonprofit has even posted a $5,000 reward in hopes of identifying the person or persons responsible for leaving the injured construction-site dog to an uncertain fate.

Every abandoned or abused animal represents a life betrayed. Justice in this case must send a clear, uncompromising message: cruelty will be met with serious punishment. Connecticut’s laws allow for jail time, heavy fines, and prohibitions on future pet ownership. These penalties must be fully pursued to protect other animals and deter would-be offenders.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear State’s Attorney Kelley,

It is alleged that two back-to-back cases of cruelty in Shelton have left one small dog dead and another traumatized. According to reports, a soaked and caged dog was rescued from a construction site after spending hours in the rain, while a second dog—abandoned in a carrier—had wounds so severe that euthanasia was the only humane option.

These incidents occurred within twenty-four hours and just a few miles of each other, highlighting an apparent alarming escalation in animal-abuse crimes statewide. Community members and advocacy groups fear that lenient sentences embolden abusers and place countless animals at risk.

We respectfully urge your office to treat this case with the utmost severity. Please pursue all available felony charges, request the longest sentence the law permits, seek substantial fines, and petition the court for a permanent prohibition on animal ownership. A firm response will honor the apparent suffering of these dogs, protect other vulnerable animals, and demonstrate that Connecticut will not tolerate cruelty.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
