Stop Racist Texts Ordering Americans into Slavery

Target: Merrick Garland, U.S. Attorney General

Goal: Investigate and punish individuals responsible for onslaught of slavery-laden texts sent to Black Americans.

“You have been selected as a slave. We will pick you up at 12 a.m. sharp no later than. Have all your belong[ing]s together. I will have my executive slaves pick you up in a purple van. Be ready to be searched down. You are now with us; You will be with plantation G always.” Children, college students, and other Black citizens across the country have received some version of this disturbing, sickening message in the days following the presidential election. More disturbing still, many of the recipients have been referenced by name.

Several state attorneys general and law enforcement agencies are investigating the source of these heinous texts. The FBI has also gotten involved and has theorized that a well-organized group is responsible. In addition, phone service providers are working to block these texts, which appear to be coming from spoof numbers.

Whomever is responsible for weaponizing one of the darkest periods in American history against Americans must be identified and held to account. Sign the petition below to demand the U.S. Department of Justice stay on top of this serious matter.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Attorney General Garland,

No American should be subjected to fear and intimidation because of their skin color. The recent racist, slavery-invoking texts sent to thousands of Black citizens are not a joke nor a laughing matter. They are a depraved weaponization of an abhorrent historical practice designed to hurt and dehumanize an entire group of people.

Please send a decisive message that this reprehensible behavior has no place in America. Launch a full, thorough investigation and ensure that the entities behind this outrageous act are held accountable.

Sincerely,
