Stop Buffalo Racing Event From Putting Profit Over Animal Safety

Target: Siddaramaiah, Chief Minister of Karnataka, India

Goal: Don’t transport buffalo over long distances in stressful conditions to participate in racing event.

The Karnataka High Court is currently hearing a public interest litigation filed by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India, seeking to restrain the state government from permitting the Kambala event scheduled in Bengaluru. Traditionally held in the districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada, Kambala involves racing buffaloes, which some argue leads to animal cruelty.

Concerns have been raised that holding Kambala in Bengaluru would result in buffaloes being transported over long distances, potentially causing stress and suffering. Additionally, the commercialization of the event, including selling tickets and setting up food courts, may further exacerbate the situation by prioritizing profit over animal welfare.

It is essential to ensure that cultural traditions do not come at the expense of humane treatment of animals. Upholding the provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act is crucial in safeguarding the well-being of these animals. Urge authorities to demonstrate a commitment to animal welfare and legal compliance by preventing this event from happening.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Chief Minister Siddaramaiah,

I am writing to express my concern regarding the scheduled Kambala event in Bengaluru. While acknowledging the cultural significance of Kambala in certain districts of Karnataka, I am worried about the potential animal cruelty associated with holding this event in the city.

Transporting buffaloes over long distances can cause them significant stress and discomfort. Additionally, conducting the event in an urban setting may not provide the necessary environment to ensure the animals’ well-being. The commercialization of the event raises further concerns about whether animal welfare will be adequately prioritized.

I urge you to consider the provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and the observations made by the Supreme Court regarding such events. Please take the necessary steps to prevent the Kambala from being held in Bengaluru, thereby protecting the buffaloes from potential harm and demonstrating a commitment to upholding animal welfare laws.

Sincerely,
