Target: Ronald Lamola, Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, South Africa
In a shocking case of alleged animal cruelty, a Cape Town police officer, who is meant to enforce the law, has been taken to court by the Cape of Good Hope Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) for allegedly neglecting his three dogs. Despite multiple warnings, the officer reportedly ignored the SPCA’s pleas to seek veterinary care for an emaciated male Boerboel and to improve the cruel living conditions of all three dogs on his property.
The SPCA reported that over the course of 12 days, the officer was issued four warnings to care for his animals, yet continued to neglect them. The male Boerboel, who should have weighed around 55 kg, was reportedly found to weigh just 30 kg. The other dogs, a female Boerboel and a cross-breed, were also in poor condition, with the female diagnosed with a chronic ear infection upon admission to the SPCA.
Thanks to a warrant issued by the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court, the SPCA and City of Cape Town Law Enforcement officers were able to remove the dogs from the property. The officer now faces serious charges under the Animals Protection Act, with potential penalties including up to 12 months in prison or a R40,000 fine.
The South African government must take this case seriously and ensure that the officer is held fully accountable for his alleged actions. This case reminds us that no one, not even law enforcement, is above the law when it comes to the humane treatment of animals. Take action now.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Minister Ronald Lamola,
I am writing to bring your attention to a deeply concerning case of alleged animal cruelty involving a Cape Town police officer, who has been charged with the severe neglect of three dogs despite receiving multiple warnings from the SPCA. This case has shocked the community, as the officer, who is sworn to uphold the law, instead allegedly allowed the animals under his care to suffer immensely.
The officer was reportedly given numerous opportunities to provide the necessary care for his dogs, but allegedly chose to neglect his responsibilities. One of the dogs, a male Boerboel, was reportedly severely emaciated, weighing only 30 kg when he should have been around 55 kg. The female Boerboel was reportedly diagnosed with a chronic ear infection, and all three dogs were kept in appalling conditions.
The officer now faces charges under the Animals Protection Act, and I urge you to ensure that he faces the maximum penalties allowed by law. Cases like this one highlight the importance of enforcing animal welfare laws, and justice must be served to send a clear message that animal cruelty will not be tolerated, regardless of the offender’s position.
Sincerely,
