Don’t Let New Tarantula Species Vanish Forever

Deep within the forested mountains of Arizona, scientists discovered yet another unknown species. As one of the most biodiverse regions on earth, the Chiricahua Mountains host a wide variety of organisms well-adapted to the cool and humid climate. A small gray and black tarantula has joined the ecosystem’s known ranks. The animal is distinguishably by fiery red hairs on its abdomen. Yet before the world even becomes acquainted with the new species, this tarantula may soon face extinction.

Habitat loss from climate change and from human-driven exploitation of these forests could deprive the tarantula of its home. In addition, concerns have arisen from conservationists that the tarantula could become the target of unscrupulous exotic pet traders, due to its unique and distinctive appearance. Similar concerns came to light when another new tarantula species (this one with electric blue markings) was recently discovered in Thailand’s notoriously at-risk mangrove forests.

The newly discovered Aphonopelma jacobii tarantula adds to the incredible, biodiverse tapestry of Arizona, which already hosts such iconic wildlife as Gila monsters and scorpions. The Chiricahua Mountains that this species calls home is at risk from deforestation, from sports-related exploitation, and most consequentially from climate change. The species will also likely face direct threats from the exotic pet trade.

Please help ensure that these animals are not lost to history before they even have a chance to establish themselves as known members of their unique ecosystem. Undertake a risk assessment for this species and take the necessary steps to safeguard these animals from extinction.
