Closure Factory Accused of Cruelly Slaughtering Horses

Target: Mr. Charlie McConalogue, Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Ireland

Goal: Enforce the immediate closure of food factory where horses allegedly died under cruel conditions.

Hundreds of protesters gathered outside Shannonside Foods Ltd in Straffan, Kildare, in response to disturbing footage aired in an RTE Investigates documentary. The footage allegedly showed serious animal welfare abuses at the facility. Protesters carried placards and called for the immediate closure of the factory, with some hanging ribbons on the gates to remember the horses that allegedly died under terrible circumstances.

The abattoir is currently under a legal notice from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, and no animals have reportedly entered the food chain from Shannonside Foods in the past three weeks. Investigations are reportedly underway across Europe into suspected illegal slaughtering and traceability defects among horses killed for human consumption.

Agriculture Minister Charlie McConalogue has vowed that those responsible will face the full rigour of the law, condemning the reported mistreatment as abhorrent and distressing. Horse Racing Ireland and Minister for Finance Michael McGrath have also expressed their outrage and urged anyone with information to report it to the authorities. Demand a thorough investigation and immediate action despite Shannonside Foods rejecting the claims made in the documentary.
