Target: Kevin Atticks, Secretary of the Maryland Department of Agriculture
Goal: Enact an immediate ban on the use of harmful herbicides and pesticides that are jeopardizing the health of aquatic ecosystems.
Maryland’s aquatic ecosystems are facing an alarming threat as the unchecked use of harmful herbicides and pesticides continues to wreak havoc on waterways. These toxic chemicals, intended to combat unwanted vegetation and pests, are causing irreparable damage to aquatic life, contaminating water sources, and disrupting the delicate balance of the ecosystems.
The widespread application of these substances is leading to devastating consequences. Aquatic species, from fish to amphibians, are experiencing rapid decline due to habitat degradation and chemical contamination. Additionally, the long-term health impacts on humans, who rely on these ecosystems for recreation and sustenance, cannot be ignored.
While the agriculture industry plays a vital role in the state’s economy, it’s imperative that the well-being of the environment and future generations are prioritized. The current regulations on herbicide and pesticide use in Maryland fall short of addressing the urgency of this crisis, allowing continued harm to the precious aquatic ecosystems.
Sign the petition below to demand an immediate ban on the use of harmful herbicides and pesticides in Maryland, protecting the aquatic ecosystems and securing a healthier future for all.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Secretary Atticks,
The waterways that weave through the state define not only the landscape, but also the identity. Yet, the very essence of these aquatic ecosystems is under grave threat due to the unrelenting use of harmful herbicides and pesticides. We urge you to act swiftly and decisively in enacting a ban on these toxic substances.
The aquatic ecosystems are teeming with life, from the smallest organisms to majestic fish and waterfowl. The unchecked proliferation of herbicides and pesticides has turned these habitats into perilous zones, compromising the survival of countless species and tarnishing the pristine beauty of the water bodies.
As concerned citizens, we implore you to champion the protection of Maryland’s environment over short-term gains. It is within your power to institute meaningful change and safeguard the natural heritage. By taking this step, you can send a powerful message that the well-being of the aquatic ecosystems and the health of the communities come first.
We urge you to prioritize the adoption of eco-friendly alternatives and sustainable practices that can preserve the integrity of the waterways without causing irreversible harm. Maryland’s future depends on the choices we make today.
Sincerely,

Maryland has done respectable things to the state. I like the oyster helping us with pollution. I think they refresh 50 gallons per day, each!
As to the information that your water ways are being polluted to extreme is beyond disappointing. There’s no news here. It’s wrong to allow this to happen. Until there are employees to do surveys and inspections to be sure pollution is not being committed by business interests looking to increase their bottom line at the expense of all others who needs water to live and survive, human and animals alike. Prison and a complete shut down may be necessary. If so, do it! The lives you save will be many!
