Target: Kathy Kraninger, Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau
Goal: Don’t let consumers lose valuable homeowners insurance.
The climate crisis is wreaking more havoc on consumers in a potential sign of things to come. Several major insurers have just pulled homeowners insurance coverage from California. They cite increasing expenses and risks from severe weather events.
The state has been a test case for nearly every type of extreme event imaginable. Droughts and wildfires have long been threats, as have earthquakes. More recently, however, the state has experienced major rain, flooding, and even tornado threats. Such heightened activity compels insurers to put many regions of California into high-risk categories, which would typically mean much higher rates for coverage of homes. Other states like Florida are experiencing similar issues.
The recent pull-out of California marks a troubling shift wherein homeowners cannot even get basic protection for problems that may arise with their homes. Sign the petition below to urge action on this on-the-rise gap in consumer protection.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Director Kraninger,
Homeowners are suffering some of the most severe consequences of a changing planet. The climate change-fueled extreme weather events in California have cost the state much, if not all, of its homeowners insurance market. This lapse in coverage will not end with California as punishing weather expands across the country.
Please make planning for and taking action on the climate crisis’ insurance impact a top priority.
Sincerely,
[Your Name Here]
